Lesson Learned - Back Up Your Computer!

I think I have finally learned my lesson!  I always knew that I should back up my important computer files regularly; unfortunately I am one who doesn't always follow her own advice.  Since my laptop was less than 6 months old I figured that surely I would be safe from any problems.  Well I was WRONG!

One day before leaving on vacation my hard drive crashed and I lost everything.  My last back up was about 6 months before.  What a pain!  Luckily I had my older laptop and it still had all the programs that I needed, but the last 6 months of data was gone.  The laptop was under warranty so they promptly sent me a new hard drive.  So after coming home from a fun week in Vegas I got to set up a whole new drive, reinstall all my software, and somehow try to reconstruct those things that I had lost. -- Once again - Lesson Learned!

There are many options to help make backing up easier.  If you don't have a lot of data or make a lot of changes you can manually back up your system once a week.

If you want a program to help you automatically back up your system, there are many different varieties available for purchase or even some for free download.   I am currently getting ready to try a free one called EZBack-it-up.  I will report back once I have tried it out.

If you want something even more automatic there are online back up services that will automatically back up your system to an online server.  Once you set up the files that you want to regularly save, it will do the rest on it's own.  Most of these have a fee, but I have found them to be as low as around $50 a year.  Of course you have to have an online connection and something faster than dial up would be preferable.

So don't make the same mistake I did.  Back up your computer files regularly!

I installed and tried the EZBack-it-up utility, an d so far I have been very hap
py with what it can d o for a free program.

It installed easily, and it only
took me a couple of minutes to set it up t o run the first back up. You can te
ll it exactly which folders and files you want to back up. Once you are set u
p, when you want to run a back up it will compare files and back up those that
have be en changed since the last run. You can set it to run on a schedule or
do a manual back up at any ti me.

It's free to download, http://www.rdcomp.net/
ezbackitup/, however there is currently no support for the software.
